Diagnostic Radiology
The Division of Diagnostic Radiology is comprised
of multiple subspecialties, including breast imaging, general radiology, gastrointestinal imaging, genitourinary imaging, musculoskeletal imaging, and thoracic imaging.
The Diagnostic Radiology sections perform diagnostic x-rays of the chest and abdomen, fluorosopic barium studies
of the gastrointestinal system as well as various studies of the
genituourinary system, such as excretory urography (Intravenous
Pyelography) and voiding cystourethrograms.
Breast Imaging
The Breast Imaging section is located in the University of Colorado Breast Center,
a multidisciplinary breast center at the new Anschutz Outpatient Pavilion,
incorporating breast imaging, breast surgery, breast oncology, internal medicine,
genetic counseling and specialized nursing. The Center houses two screen-film
mammography units, one GE Senographe 2000D full-field digital mammography unit,
a Fischer prone stereotactic table and dedicated ultrasound. Breast MRIs
performed at University Hospital are interpreted in the Breast Imaging section.
Outpatient breast surgery is performed one floor below the Breast Center.
Lymphoscintigraphy is performed by Nuclear Medicine at University Hospital.
All forms of image guided breast biopsies and localizations, including mammographic,
sonographic, and MRI-guided are performed by the breast imaging section.
As predicted by the design of the Breast Center, the radiologists in breast imaging
enjoy a high degree of collaboration with other disciplines. The proximity to the
clinics allows for improved communication and increased patient convenience. All
imaging and image-guided biopsy is performed by the radiologists.
Musculoskeletal Imaging
The Musculoskeletal Radiology section provides subspecialty service
to a large Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Department, Rheumatology Department, and collaborative
Spine Center at the University of Colorado Hospital and surrounding clinics. This provides a broad
caseload to encompass all aspects of Musculoskeletal Radiology. CT, MR, radiography, and ultrasound
are tailored to clinical requirements. Procedures to include vertebroplasty and spinal injections, joint
injection for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes, bone and soft tissue biopsy, and cryo and thermoablation
of primary and metastatic bone and soft tissue lesions are offered to our broad base of referral
physicians.
Thoracic Imaging
The thoracic imaging section provides services
in all aspects of imaging diagnosis of diseases of the chest. Services
provided include computerized tomography (CT) scans of the chest,
including high resolution chest CT, chest magnetic resonance imaging
(MR) and CT guided biopsies and drainages. Services are provided
by our physicians at the National Jewish Medical and Research Center,
University of Colorado Hospital, and the Anschutz Outpatient Center.
