Some Background on CIS
The Center for Instructional Support (CIS) is an outgrowth of two prior
entities:
- the Division of Faculty Development of the Association of American
Medical Colleges (AAMC) (1974-1978), and
the National Center for Faculty Development at the University of Miami
School of Medicine (1978-1990),
both founded and directed by Hilliard Jason.
CIS is a small operation, which has been based in Boulder, Colorado
since June, 1990.
It is devoted to helping enhance the quality of, and humanize the process
of, communication and learning in health professions education and health
care.
We pursue these goals:
by preparing and distributing resources and
information
- (such as we are doing with this web site)
and by offering:
- seminars
- workshops
- facilitation
- presentations
- consultations and
- coaching
- for educators and educational programs, as well as for administrators,
clinicians, and others who work in health care organizations.
Some of the areas in which CIS staff members and associates have provided
help to health professionals are:
- enhancing instructional skills (e.g., skills needed for fostering learning
in clinical settings, small groups)
- enhancing leadership and managerial skills
- enhancing communication skills
- personal and professional development
- organizational development
- building effective teams, including interdisciplinary teams
- interdisciplinary education
- diagnosing and dealing constructively with problems and issues in programs
and organizations.
