Health Professions Schools in Service to the Nation
A program of the Pew Health Professions Commission and the National Fund
for Medical Education, sponsored by The Pew Charitable Trusts, the Corporation
for National and Community Service's Learn and Serve America: Higher Education
program, and the Bureau of Health Professions.
The Health Professions Schools in Service to the Nation (HPSISN) program
is pleased to announce its twenty grantees. Chosen from 89 applicants representing
37 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, the grantees are a
diverse group of health professions schools targeting unmet community health
needs ranging from homelessness to elder abuse. Their community partners
range from public schools to community health centers to social service
agencies. All but two have proposed interdisciplinary service-learning programs
involving multiple health professions disciplines.
The goals of the HPSISN program are to: (1) strengthen partnerships between
health professions schools and communities which address unmet health needs
(2) to instill an ethic of community service and social responsibility in
health professions schools, students and faculty; and (3) to equip the next
generation of health professionals with community-oriented competencies
necessary to practice in a changing health care environment.
We hope to achieve these goals by developing, implementing and institutionalizing
service-learning programs in the nation's health professions schools. Through
this new program, the Pew Commission seeks to create a network of innovative
schools training the next generation of health professionals with competencies
necessary to improve our nation's health.

Some representative quotes from our grantees illustrate the philosophical
underpinnings of their programs:
"...this project is an exciting opportunity to create a new model for
our own students and other inner city schools in which we can effectively
respond to community needs while allowing the students a window into the
lives of their neighbors - so that they might develop relationships, be
role models, be less afraid, become committed to service." D'Youville
College
"The Washington Metropolitan Area is rich both in its resources and
in its diversity. It is nonetheless plagued by many of the health problems
of urban poverty...It is essential for students in the health professions
to understand the social basis of health and disease. It is equally important
for students in different disciplines to learn how to work together effectively
in improving the health of communities." George Washington University
"A tendency exists for those in the health professions to consider
that, because health careers are by their very nature service oriented,
no other volunteer activity is needed. Nothing could be further from the
truth. The opportunities for service that are available...benefit the community
and assist students to look beyond their own own desires and wishes to identify
the needs of others. " Regis University
"Curing a child's strep throat is important, but can't be done if there
is no money to buy medication, no transportation to the pharmacy, a communication
issue that prevents the parent from giving the medication appropriately,
the parent's health beliefs value injections over tablets, or the neighborhood
is too dangerous to bring siblings in for care. We need to teach our students
to solve problems on a community level as well as individual level by advocating
for the client within the community and attempting broader solutions than
treating just one sore throat...Service-learning is a good beginning."

HRSA Seeks Research Abstracts on Effectiveness
of Community Partnerships
The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has called for abstracts of studies that examine the impact of academic/community partnerships on the educational missions of universities and on the needs of the communities they serve. A panel will select the three most outstanding studies, the results of which will be presented at the third annual HRSA Primary Care Conference, Feb. 26-28 in Washington, D.C.
Abstracts must describe projects currently underway or completed that produce new information directly relevant to policy development regarding academic/community partnerships. Preference will be given to applicants who provide empirical support for developing and strengthening these partnerships.
