Continuing Education via the Web
Weekly cases are delivered by HTML push email to subscribers (just like Netscape's in-box direct service). We employ a geographically distributed image server network (person in South Africa, Australia etc. should experience same access time to images as person in Houston), implement document encryption (secure server) for CME participants, and are in the process of translating cases into 5 languages besides English.
Cases are available through both complementary and CME subscription. CME credit is accumulated on a per case basis. The system is entirely electronic with the computer system automatically keeping a track of credit.
M.D. Anderson Cancer Center: Internet CME
Although the cases are primarily directed toward physicians, we invite all participants and encourage complementary subscribers as we realize that not everyone who has an interest in self-education needs to accumulate official CME credit.

EFPO (Educating Future Physicians for Ontario) This site has information about a project that may be the largest ever collaboration among medical schools. The 5 Ontario, Canada schools are collaborating to make medical education (undergraduate and postgraduate) "more responsive to the evolving needs of the people of Ontario." EFPO is funded by a consortium including Associated Medical Services (a previous health insurance company from the pre-government insurance days), the Ontario government, and the 5 medical schools. (The 8 years of funding began January, 1990.) The emphasis is on faculty development as the best strategy for implementing the changes needed.

LectureLinks
is a distance learning framework comprising World Wide Web links that assist
students at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in accessing course information,
lecture notes, handouts, sample exams, and relevant Web links in a searchable,
lecture-by-lecture format. It was designed as a way to facilitate access
to educationally relevant resources that exist both within and outside of
the institution. For each course lecture notes, old exams, Web-based CAI
(computer-assisted instruction) materials were gathered and uploaded to
the file server. In addition to resources created at Hopkins, students have
identified external links to sites that contain materials relevant to their
studies. By collecting these resources and organizing them in a time-critical
format, students are exposed to a wider range of educational materials than
they would normally have time to seek out.
Please note that Lecture notes and old exams are only accessible to users
with a Hopkins IP number. The rest of the site is open to everyone. This
prototype project has recently received funding and is in the process of
being automated to maintain accuracy.
