Colorado Summer Health Institute
The health care industry is rapidly developing and changing in Colorado and throughout the country. There are over 200 health related careers that can provide students opportunities for challenge and fulfillment. If you are interested in a health care career it is important to build a strong foundation in high school. - Purpose:
- The Summer Health and Science Careers Institute introduces high school students with academic ability and interest in the sciences to health care and science-based career opportunities. The institute will provide students with information and experience to help them make informed career decisions.
- Explore a variety of health career choices.
- Meet doctors, nurses, dentists, physical therapists, and other health professionals.
- Learn how to plan your career and become more aware of your interests.
- Participate in hands-on activities and job shadowing that teach you about health careers.
- Meet students from all over Colorado who are interested in health careers.
- Get tips for completing college applications and applying for financial aid.
- Room, meals, transportation, and tuition provided.

- Southeast Colorado AHEC, Pueblo: June 14-18
- Centennial AHEC, Greeley: June 15-18
- Central Colorado AHEC, Denver: June 15-18
- Events/Activities:
- Each Regional AHEC develops their own local program, some highlights from around the state include:
- Students learn to suture (pigs foot)
- visit the Olympic Training Center physiology lab
- spend time observing in hospital departments like surgery and operating rooms
- shadowing of a variety of healthcare professionals
- visiting a forensic lab
- Eligibility/details:
- You must have completed your sophomore year in high school by June 2004 and be between the ages of 15 and 18.
- You must be recommended by your high school counselor, teacher, community leader, or a local health professional

- On-line HIPAA Course
- Everyone in the Summer Health Institute needs to complete a short course on the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). HIPAA is set of rules for health professionals that detail how to protect and safeguard patient information.
