Senior Professional Research Assistant

The American Indian and Alaska Native Programs (AIANP) of the University of Colorado Denver is seeking a Research Interventionist to work in a part-time position (.25 FTE) on an oral health intervention project to deliver a client centered counseling approach to caries prevention called Motivational Interviewing;  (pre service training will be provided).  This position is based at the Southern Ute Health Center in Ignacio, CO.

Nature of Work
The person in this position will be primarily responsible for assisting with the implementation and management of a pilot oral health intervention project with parents of infants and toddlers who attend the Health Center’s well-child clinic. 

Professional Field
Clinical dental hygiene, emphasis on dental public health programs including dental health education.

Supervision Received
This position will report to and be supervised by the Project Coordinator in Denver.  Clinical supervision on site will be provided by the clinic’s chief dental officer.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Work closely with health center and AIANP project staff to identify, recruit, and consent study participants, deliver the project intervention, collect data, and evaluate the oral health project.
  • Perform dental assessments and provide oral health services to project participants and document oral health and other study related data.
  • Assist with referrals for dental care and communicate these appropriately with IHS dental staff.
  • In conjunction with the project team, assist with the timely and accurate management of databases for the oral health project.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience with health promotion or oral health programs.
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office software package.
  • Detail orientation with ability to assess relationships between detail and broad project goals.
  • Able to work well in a team environment and observe strict rules of confidentiality and appropriate communication.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene required. 
  • Clinical dental hygiene practice experience such as dental office, community health center, public health practice. Master’s degree or oral health project management experience preferred.

Salary Range
$10,500 - $12,600 (.25 FTE), salary commensurate with degree and experience.

Professional Research Assistant (CEED)

Nature of Work
This is a full-time position working with two research projects at the American Indian and Alaska Native Programs, University of Colorado Denver.  This individual will assist the PI and Program Directors with program planning and coordination of program activities among affiliated research collaborators for the CDC-funded Center of Excellence in Eliminating Disparities (CEED), and will work directly with the PI and Project Director to coordinate the Denver-based research activities for the Healing Hearts project funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.

Examples of Work Performed

Center of Excellence in Eliminating Disparities

  • Participate in all program meetings to assist in planning and coordinating program activities among affiliated research collaborators and Denver-based CEED meetings and workshops.
  • Assist in administering surveys to assess the organizational culture and effectiveness of independently funded grantee organizations.
  • Assist in developing agendas and coordinating any off-site CEED meetings to assess grantee organizations.
  • Assist in conducting follow-up surveys of grantees to track progress one year after organizational culture change has been implemented.
  • Assist CEED Program Directors with the development of quarterly, annual and final reports that summarize program activities and results for research collaborators and sponsors.
  • Ensure regular communication and coordination of program activities among affiliated faculty and community partners.
  • Monitor program budget expenditures in coordination with the Associate Director and AIANP Fiscal Coordinator.

Healing Hearts Research Project

  • Assist Denver and field staff to enroll eligible participants in the study, including:
  • Coordination and scheduling of study participant travel to Denver for clinical testing
  • Purchase and track respondent compensation for preliminary screening and participation in clinical exams, and manage disbursement of compensation.
  • Purchase all medical supplies needed for preliminary screening.
  • Accompany participants in the Healing Hearts study to weekly exams at the Anschutz medical facilities.
  • Manage database for Healing Hearts study, including procuring data sets from various hospitals, updating and dispersing data to research partners, generating data reports as needed, and keeping project database up to date (in Microsoft Excel).
  • Facilitate monthly meetings between PI and Co-Investigators on Healing Hearts project.
  • Maintain participant files for Healing Hearts study. Includes coordinating with field and Denver-based staff to update patient records, and following up with hospitals and research partners as needed.
  • Monitor program budget expenditures, ensuring that all clinical exam and lab fees are appropriately charged.

The American Indian and Alaska Native Programs of the University of Colorado Denver is seeking a professional candidate to work in a part-time position (.75 FTE) as a Study Coordinator on its HIV-prevention intervention projects based in Pine Ridge, South Dakota.

Nature of Work
This position is based in Pine Ridge, South Dakota and will be primarily responsible for coordinating all aspects of HIV prevention research projects conducted by the American Indian and Alaska Native Programs in a Northern Plains tribe.

Examples of Work Performed

  • Organize and coordinate all aspects of school-based research with local youth.  In particular, this work will focus on sexual risk, mental and physical well-being, and other health-related factors. 
  • Responsible for ensuring that project data is collected in a manner consistent with the study protocol; organize, track, and monitor all aspects of project data.
  • Coordinate meetings with clinicians, school officials, and teachers to obtain approval of project plans, and direct project data collection.
  • Organize and facilitate small group discussions (focus groups) of project materials and experiences.
  • Work with tribal and community organizations, area schools, and youth groups to coordinate community input and feedback over the life of the project.
  • Coordinate research assistants involved in project implementation and data collection.
  • The Study Coordinator will be a member of the Pine Ridge Field Office for the University of Colorado and will be expected to contribute to the operations of that office.  These duties include helping to answer questions from community members about activities, assist with other projects, and other duties as assigned.

  • Data collection for this study is based out of our field office in Pine Ridge, SD.  The Principal Investigator and Project Director for this study are based in Denver, CO.  This position requires the ability to function independently in the coordination of all aspects of this research study.

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience; knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite (Access, Excel, Word, Outlook); Have a valid driver’s license, proof of auto liability insurance, and be willing to travel reservation-wide, and occasionally out of state.

Salary Range
$23,250 - $26,250 (.75 FTE, 30 hours per week)
