Residency Training: Requirements
  1. The Department of Anesthesiology at UCD is an advanced program. Therefore applicants need to complete a PGY 1 year prior to entering the program. For most applicants this means that they will need to match for their PGY 1 and 2 years at the same time. The PGY 1 year must be in direct patient care. Training that is limited to pathology, radiology or psychiatry is not acceptable. We suggest that applicants complete either a transitional or an Internal Medicine internship.

  2. Certification by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), the National Board of Osteopathic Medicine (NBOME), or the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).
  1. International Medical Graduates (IMG)
We do accept International Medical Graduates into our program; however first preference will be given to non-IMG applicants.

  2. IMG's must meet the following criteria:
    • The IMG applicant must have already completed a PGY I in an ACGME accredited program in the United States or be in the process of currently applying for one. They need to apply for their PGY I year at the same time they apply for the first year of Anesthesia (PGY II year). The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Colorado Denver is an Advanced Training Program. Therefore we do not offer PGY I training.
    • The Department of Anesthesiology participates in ERAS, so applications need to be submitted through that process.
    • The IMG applicant must hold a valid ECFMG certificate.
    • The IMG applicant must:
      1. be a U.S. citizen or hold a valid U.S. resident alien card
      2. have scores of 220 or above on USMLE Steps 1 and 2
      3. possess (or be eligible to obtain) all three of the following:
        1. a valid passport.
        2. a valid 1-94 card (obtained upon entry to the United States) that indicates D/SJ-1 (duration of Status for J-1 visa).
        3. a J-1 visa sponsorship from the ECFMG to train at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.
    • The IMG applicant must have scores of 220 or above on USMLE Steps 1 and 2.
