Residency Training: Virtue Research Scholarship
The University of Colorado Department of Anesthesiology is committed to the furtherance of the art and science of Anesthesiology. Over the past decade or so we have clearly established ourselves as one of the top clinical training programs in the country. This is due, in part, to the diversity of the training offered across four excellent hospitals in Denver (the University of Colorado Hospital, the Denver Children's Hospital, Denver Health and Hospitals, and the Denver VA Medical Center) as well as the depth these hospital have in the surgical procedures offered and the quality of the anesthesiology faculty, especially in the subspecialty areas relevant to the specific hospitals.

We also desire to establish ourselves as one of the top anesthesiology research programs. Over the past decade the University of Colorado Department of Anesthesiology has recruited nearly a dozen principal investigators who focus on various aspects of perioperative medicine. We now have the depth and diversity in research to also be counted among the top research training programs in the country.

The goal of the Virtue Research Scholarships is to attract individuals into our residency program who will avail themselves of our rich research environment and dedicate themselves to becoming researchers and academic anesthesiologists. We believe that the extra support offered by the Scholarship will help offset the hardships of additional training that these dedicated individuals will need to take on in order to be successful.

One new Virtue Scholarship will be available to be awarded each year. Beginning with the CA-1 year, each Scholar will receive $12,500 per year as an additional stipend for each of five consecutive years. The first three years of support will cover the three years of residency and the subsequent two years of support will be available should the individual embark on a research track as a junior faculty member.

Scholars who opt not to complete their residency training or their two year post residency research commitment will be expected to pay back whatever portion of the Scholarship funds they have already received. Scholars electing to do clinical research will become part of the Clinical Training Program at the University of Colorado Denver Health Sciences Center. CA3 research fellowship time does not count towards the 2-year research commitment.
