| The University of Colorado Denver Anschutz Medical Campus provides an incredible opportunity to create, develop and construct a 21st-century academic health center — from the ground up. |
The University of Colorado Denver's move to Anschutz Medical Campus is estimated to cost $1.553 billion, and is resulting in 3.4 million gross square feet of education, patient care and research space.
An innovative idea
In 1995, when the Fitzsimons Army Medical Center was officially put on the Base Realignment and Closure list, officials from Health Sciences Center, University of Colorado Hospital and the City of Aurora presented an innovative proposal to the Department of Defense in Washington, D.C. The proposal emphasized the benefits of reusing the decommissioned base to build — from the ground up — a world-class, academic health center, including state-of-the-art health care facilities. In addition, the campus is directly adjacent to the Colorado Science and Technology Park at Fitzsimons, providing opportunities to take university research discoveries into the stream of commerce at an accelerated rate, through affiliation with the biotech companies in the 160-acre development.
