It
is the hope that each year we will be able to help bring a noted
academic in this field to HSC to make a presentation, work with
the Steering Committee and interact directly with students. In 2003-4,
the visit of Dr. Richard Selzer, which was a great success, was
supported by this program.
When we incorporated an art observation session in the Foundations
of Doctoring curriculum, 25 or half of the first year physical therapy
students participated with the second year medical students. All
50 of the first year students’ observational skills were pre
and post tested using static and moving images of patients with
neuro-muscular-skeletal deficits. The experimental and control groups
will be compared using raw scores from predetermined observational
criteria.
This
study will be replicated with 2nd year PT students. In the future,
we will replicate the study substituting moving images as part of
the didactic Art in Medicine training sessions.
