Benzoic Acid, Plasma or Serum
Availability: Mon. - Fri., 0800 - 1700
Turnaround Time: 2 - 3 days.
Minimum Volume: 0.5 mL (at least 1.0 mL preferred).
Specimen Handling: Centrifuge and separate from cells
as soon as possible.
Freeze immediately.
Interpretive Reference Range:
Concentration < 2.5 mM: Not toxic.
Concentration > 3 mM: Toxicity likely.
Concentration > 6 mM: Possibly severe, life-threatening toxicity.
Use: Evaluation of benzoic acid toxicity in hyperamonemia and non-ketotic hyperglycinemia.
Methodology: Stable isotope dilution gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS).
