The Agilent TOF is an orthogonal-axis time-of-flight (oa_TOF) mass spectrometer. An orthogonal TOF has a perpendicular flight tube, hence ions are propelled in a direction perpendicular to their original path. The TOF can be used to analyze proteins, peptides, and metabolites. The major advantage of using the TOF for these applications is that is provides high mass accuracy. For whole proteins, this is important for identifying modifications and/or isoforms. For peptides, it can be combined with peptide mass mapping to identify proteins and characterize modifications. For metabolomics, it can be used to unambiguously identify small molecules from simple or complex samples. On this instrument, we currently have an electrospray source; however, nano-, APCI, and MALDI sources are also available.
