Quadrupole ion traps have long been the workhorse of proteomics and we have three traps in our facility. The Agilent XCT Plus trap is a high capacity instrument. That means that sensitivity is improved because more ions can be stored in the trap without space charging degrading performance. The quality of MS/MS data is also generally better because of higher overall signal. This is important for the analysis of low abundance peptides. Another advantage of this high capacity trap ithat it can scan faster than many other instruments, while maintaining better than unit resolution. This feature is useful when analyzing very complex mixtures such as digests of lysates, cellular fractions, or immunoprecipitations where many peptide ions may co-elute from an HPLC. Our Agilent traps are interfaced to AP-MALDI, nanospray and HPLC-Chip sources, providing us with a variety of analytical options. Follow the links for more information.
