Uwe Christians, Director of Research Photo

Uwe Christians, M.D., Ph.D. is Professor and Vice Chair of Research of the Department of Anesthesiology. He received his MD with highest honors from the Medizinsiche Hochschule Hannover in Germany, is board certified in Pharmacology and Toxicology and Clinical Pharmacology and is a Diplomat of the American Board of Clinical Pharmacology. He has joint appointments in Biomolecular Structure and the School of Pharmacy. In addition he is an adjunct Professor of Pharmacology at the Medizinische Hochschule Hannover in Germany.  He was awarded a Master in Research Quality Assurance by the British Association of Research Quality Assurance. For five years, Dr. Christians was a post-doctoral fellow in Transplant Immunology at the Stanford University School of Medicine (Dr. R.E. Morris) and in the Department of Biopharmaceutical Sciences at the University of California (Dr. L.Z. Benet). Dr. Christians has more than 20 years of experience with mass spectrometry and NMR-based metabolic profiling technologies. Since 2003, he serves as the Director of the Mass Spectrometry Core of the Clinical Nutrition Research Unit. Dr. Christians’ research focus is the development and validation of omics-based strategies as tools for drug development, translational medicine and clinical diagnostics. He is the author of more than 160 peer-reviewed original research and review articles.

Karen Jonscher, Manager - Proteomics Research KJ Pic

Karen R. Jonscher, Ph.D. earned her M.S. and Ph.D. in Applied Physics from the California Institute of Technology under Drs. Leroy E. Hood and John R. Yates, III.  Her research involved developing advanced mass spectrometry ion sources and analytical methods for identifying post-translational modifications in virology applications.  Currently, Dr. Jonscher serves as the Proteomics Director for the Center for Nutrition Research Unit mass spectrometry core facility at the University of Colorado Denver, Department of Anesthesiology.  Dr. Jonscher brings almost 18 years of experience in biological mass spectrometry to bear in the development of methods and data analysis/validation for proteomics applications.  Dr. Jonscher’s research is currently focused on the development of targeted proteomics assays to selectively identify modified proteins.  She taught a graduate level mass spectrometry course for the Chemistry department at UCD’s Downtown Denver Campus, taught in the “UCD Hands-On Proteomics Training Course” in collaboration with faculty from the National Jewish Medical and Research Center and offers mentored training in proteomics technologies.
