Utility of Amino Acid Analysis in Research

Ion chromatogram showing separation of amino acids by GC with subsequent identification using mass spectrometry.

Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and the precursors to many metabolic compounds. Analysis and quantification of amino acids in a protein is achieved using stable isotope tracers. The process includes hydrolyzing the proteins, derivitizing the amino acids, then separating and identifying them by mass and retention time using either GC or LC/MS.
