PROTEIN PRECIPITATION
Samples containing high concentrations of interfering substances such as salts are candidates for protein precipitation. Like desalting columns, this clean-up techniques has a two-fold advantage; it allows for the removal of unwanted substances and the exchange of buffers into an IEF compatible matrix. The CNRU Mass Spectrometry Core Facility uses protein precipitation for complex samples that are not suitable for desalting columns.
We primarily use the GE Healthcare (Amersham) 2-D Clean-Up Kit which precipitates the proteins while keeping interfering substances in solution.

We have also had success using methanol/chloroform to precipitate proteins.
