Cardiac CT-Interventional Project

Cardiac CT services are being dramatically enhanced with a Radiology-Cardiology partnership as part of the Cardiac and Vascular Center. There are two state-of-the-art multislice CT scanners at the Anschutz Medical Campus. Non-invasive coronary angiography is being offered.

A major new research initiative with Philips Medical Systems involves a joint Radiology-Cardiology advanced cardiac imaging program involving cutting-edge clinical services, innovative technology development, imaging research, and coordinated training in cardiac imaging between the Radiology and Cardiology Training Programs.

On the 2nd floor of AOP next to the state-of-the-art cardiovascular interventional suite is a 40-slice CT scanner . With state-of-the-art software we expect to rapidly make the transition to non-invasive coronary angiography with minimal contrast (75 cc’s) and accommodation of fast heart rates.

The research proposal will involve a joint project with Philips to develop, validate, and assess the impact on clinical outcomes of the use of cardiac CT for pre-interventional planning (PCI, peripheral and carotid interventions, valvular and adult congenital interventions, and cardiac surgery). The second phase will involve integrating CT images into the interventional suite. This research will serve as seeding for peer-reviewed grants from NIH, SBIB, AHA, etc. Philips is likely to expand the number of imaging scientists they have on site at UCD and complete a Master Research Agreement with UCD as they have with only a few other US institutions.

Related Developments:
David Lynch, MD and Robert Quaife, MD have been named as the co-medical directors of CT/MR Cardiac Imaging. Radiology and Cardiology Faculty will jointly read Coronary CT studies. Drs. Dyer and Groves will also be part of the clinical team in CTA.

James Chen, PhD and David Lynch, MD are co-investigators on the research grants. , will administer the project.

Further initiatives in fellow training, other imaging modalities, and the specifics of accessing these clinical services will be forthcoming.
