Echocardiography Program
|
With the recruitment of Ernesto Salcedo, MD the cardiac ultrasound service at UCH has strong leadership in clinical services, training, research, and administration. The program is growing in volume and has a team of experienced and highly competent sonographers. Recent accomplishments and planned developments include the following:
Echocardiographic support for a variety of innovative interventional treatments has been a critical factor in the development of successful clinical and academic programs in alcohol ablation in obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, adult congenital heart disease interventions, and catheter-based therapy for valvular heart disease.
New 3-D imaging technology has been purchased and training is now underway to bring this service to our patients.
Improved image archiving and access to echo studies at remote workstations are planned with expansion of the infrastructure that will be shared with images from cardiac catheterization laboratory. These workstations will be at both 9th and Colorado campus and at the Fitzsimons campus.
Plans are emerging for a regional clinical echo conference that will bring together interested parties from UCH and private practice.
New services will be available for the utilization of echocardiographic methods for patient selection for resynchronization therapy.
As part of Dr. Salcedo’s recruitment there is a new research effort in the detection and management of pre-clinical atherosclerosis. The following techniques will be available for both clinical research and clinical care:
o Carotid intima medial thickness measurements
o Brachial artery reactivity for evaluation of endothelial function
o Transthoracic echo Doppler flow studies for coronary flow reserve
o Aortic elastance for evaluation of atherosclerosis burden
Echocardiographic services are now available for inpatients at AIP and soon for outpatients at Fitzsimons.
Dr. Salcedo is initiating a variety of improvements in acquisition of echo studies and in standardizing interpretations. A variety of faculty are participating in the echo reading service including Drs. Hergott, Ratts, Quaife, Wolfel, Weinberger, Wolf, and Lindenfeld.
