Division of Cardiology The Division of Cardiology is entering a new leadership. We are pleased to welcome Peter Buttrick, MD the S. Gilbert Blount Endowed Chair and Head, Division of Cardiology. Peter is a nationally known, distinguished cardiologist who maintains a very active general cardiology clinical practice. Peter has been a tenured Professor, Head of the Division of Cardiology and Co-Director of the Center for Cardiovascular Research at the University of Illinois in Chicago for eight years. The division of cardiology is comprised of more than 60 full-time faculty appointments. Members of our Division, who specialize in both noninvasive and invasive cardiology, are devoted to providing state-of-the-art, compassionate healthcare ranging from standard procedures such as outpatient consultation, echocardiography, angiography, electrophysiology testing, percutaneous coronary revascularization and heart transplantation, to advanced clinical research into heart failure, cardiac rehabilitation, preventive cardiology, radio-frequency ablation, and cardiac MRI. The division of Cardiology is committed to education that is reflected in the training provided to our fellows, residents and students. Our fellows, in particular, benefit from a rich didactic program and from clinical experiences that are structured specifically to enhance their educational impact. Clinical and basic research opportunities are integral to the educational process, and all fellows have substantial periods of protected research time which is designed to facilitate their development as academic cardiologists. The fellows are exposed to basic research by the support of the NIH sponsored Training Grant. The strength of the Cardiology Division extends to the affiliated hospitals. At Denver Health Medical Center Carlin Long, MD heads an outstanding clinical and academic unit that delivers cardiac care to the patient population of one of the premier city/county hospitals in the United States. At Denver Veterans Administration Hospital Gregory Schwartz, MD is Chief of an established group of outstanding academicians and clinicians who provide care for the region’s veteran population. At University of Colorado Hospital Dr. John Carroll, Clinical Chief heads an outstanding group of clinicians with advanced specialized clinical programs providing state of the art care to patients in the Rocky Mountain Region.
