Brief summary
Tuberculosis has been declared a global health emergency; the combined effects of HIV-co-infection and multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB) threaten global TB control. Thus, this is a time of unprecedented need for new TB drugs and research on TB therapeutics. Fortunately, this is also a time of unprecedented opportunity – 5 new drugs for TB have entered clinical trials, 3 of them in novel classes that retain full activity against MDR-TB and extremely drug-resistant TB (XDR-TB). Recognizing the urgent need for research on the pharmacokinetics and drug-drug interactions involving these drugs, particularly among patients with HIV co-infection, investigators from two large clinical trials groups, the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) and Tuberculosis Trials Group (TBTC) met in Denver on August 28, 2007.
