Research and Facilities

Introduction

The University of Colorado Denver ranks among the top 20 medical centers in the country in terms of biomedical research funding and facilities.  The Cell and Developmental Biology Department (CDB) is located on the new Anschutz Medical School campus in northwest Aurora.  This new 578 campus is a redevelopment of the former Fitzsimons Army Medical Center and includes administrative, research, clinical, and teaching activities. The nearly-complete renovation and transformation of the old Fitzsimons is the largest medically-related redevelopment project in the United States and represents a $4.3 billion dollar investment in science research and education. The 160 acre Colorado Bioscience Park campus is being developed directly adjacent to the Anschutz Medical School campus, providing easy access and enhanced opportunities for partnerships with the biotechnology industry.

Research and Training Space

The Department of Cell and Developmental Biology occupies 38,356 square feet of research, meeting, education and administrative space, mainly on the 11th an 12th floors of Research Complex Tower 1 South building (RC1 South). Research space includes lab areas, dark rooms, hoods and research cores that comprise 68% of the total.  Space used for instruction and training purposes comprises 16% administrative space, includes the Departmental office, faculty offices, and conference rooms is 13% of the total.  The Department of Cell and Developmental Biology's Electronic Microscopy Facility is located on the first floor occuping 3% of the total usable research space.

Electron Microscope Facility (EMF)

The Electron Microscope Facility (EMF) at the University of Colorado School of Medicine is a multi-user/service facility, administered by the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology.  The mission of the EM Facility is to provide biological-biomedical researchers with state-of-the-art instrumentation, training and services for high-resolution scanning electron microscopy, conventional and energy-filtering transmission electron microscopy, optical, fluorescence, and laser scanning confocal microscopy, and image analysis on a recharge basis. The facility receives partial support from a P30 Grant.

EMF is a research instrumentation and service facility, open to state, university, and outside users. Instrument use and technician services are available on a recharge fee basis. Clients can be trained in specimen preparation and to use the instruments themselves or can request assistance from the EMF staff.

User Fees

EM Facility User Fees for July 1, 2007– July 1, 2008

Beam time charges are set according to defray costs of the service contract and other maintenance costs.

The materials surcharge is designed to offset costs associated with specimen preparation, staining, cutting and so forth.

Ultramicrotome time is levied only when the user operates the microtome. If the technician operates the machine, then it is included in the charge for Tech Time.

EM Facility Client Beam Time Tech Time Untra Microtome
UCD Users (non-Neuroscience/CDB) $50.00 Per Hour $45/hr. + 10% materials surcharge $25/hr. + 10% materials surcharge
non-UCD users $75.00 per Hour $60/hr. + 10% materials surcharge $35/hr. + 10% materials surcharge
CDB and Neuroscience Users $35.00 per Hour $30/hr. + 10% materials surcharge $20/hr. + 10% materials surcharge
