Education is a focal point of both the UCD and the Center
on Aging (COA), and it will continue to be a top priority into the twenty-first
century.

- Health professionals from the University, Veterans Administration
Medical Center, community affiliates and many private organizations
in a bi-weekly Geriatric Grand Round series.
- Students in five graduate health professional programs on the
UCD campus, through both discipline-specific and interdisciplinary
training:

- Medicine
- Nursing
- Dentistry
- Pharmacy
- Physical therapy
- University of Denver students in Social Work and Law Programs,
through interdisciplinary educational activities.
- UCD campus groups, through COA Faculty who present numerous
interdisciplinary activities such as:

- Training for non-primary care physician groups
- Lectures in Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Pharmacy
and Physical Therapy.
- Urban and rural outreach areas of the state, through
discipline-specific and interdisciplinary geriatric continuing
education, provided by COA faculty in cooperation with the Area
Health Education Centers (AHEC's) throughout the state.
- National and international professional organizations, in
geriatric seminars presented by COA faculty.

The interdisciplinary faculty of the COA utilize a variety of
teaching methods for the multitude of student/trainees. For example:
- One-to-one discipline-specific and interdisciplinary encounters
with students on clinical rotations:

- Formal didactic lectures
- Case discussions
- Impromptu interdisciplinary team meetings.
- Block rotations that include semester-long interdisciplinary
didactic and community-based clinical experientials for:

- Graduate level adult/geriatric and family nurse practitioner
students
- Graduate social work students
- Doctor of pharmacy
- Dental students.
- Month-long geriatric rotations for the general internal medicine
and family medicine residents.
- Multi-year longitudinal ambulatory care rotations for medical
students in their primary care rotations.
- Development of self-study educational materials.
The educational experiences include direct patient care in a variety
of ambulatory settings:
- The Senior's Clinic at University Hospital
- Denver Veterans Administration Medical Center
- Private not-for-profit, and for-profit geriatric clinics
- Residential nursing homes
- Total Long-term Care, a Colorado PACE replication site
- Hospice
- Home care.
In addition, students/trainees are involved in acute inpatient
hospital settings and consultation services at:
- University Hospital
- VA
- Geriatric Evaluation and Management Unit at the Denver VA.
The Colorado Geriatric Education Center, in conjunction with the
Colorado AHEC system or other state and community agencies, has
provided geriatric continuing education to over 6000 health
professionals throughout the state.

- Geriatric Grand Rounds: The
Geriatric Grand Rounds
are high quality presentations geared towards trainees in our
teaching programs. They are attended by an average of 50-60
professionals from the campus and community. They are held on the
1st, 3rd, and 5th
Thursday mornings from September through May, 7:30 -
8:30 am, in the Board Room (rm 7000), Anschutz Office Building, on the Anschutz
Medical Campus, Aurora, Colorado. The Anschutz Office Building is located at
12631 East 17th Ave. These presentations are accredited
for continuing medical education credits (ACCME).
