Geriatrics Center of
Excellence News

In July 2002, the Hartford/Jahnigen Center of Excellence in Geriatrics awarded Assistant Professor Stipends to Michele Basche, MD, and Wendolyn Gozansky, MD, MPH.

Through her project entitled An Age-Stratified, Phase I Study of Capecitabine, ZD1839, and Oxaliplatin in Patients with Advanced Solid Tumors, Dr. Basche is investigating the effectiveness of the combination of capecitabine, ZD1839, and oxaliplatin as a second-line treatment of colorectal cancer in both younger and older patients.

Dr. Gozansky's project entitled Estrogens, Cortisol, and Visceral Fat in Menopausal Women aims to extend existing knowledge about the potential mechanisms by which hormone replacement therapy may prevent cardiovascular disease after menopause.

Drs. Michele Basche and
Wendolyn Gozansky have been
awarded Hartford/Jahnigen
Center of Excellence
Assistant Professor Stipend.

The Hartford/Jahnigen Center of Excellence also awarded a Fellowship Stipend to Cari Levy, MD, Second-year Fellow in the Divisions of Geriatric Medicine and Health Care Policy and Research, for her project entitled Nursing Home vs. Hospital: Predictors of Site of Death Among Nursing Home Residents. With her fellowship award, Dr. Levy is comparing nursing home residents who die in the nursing home with those who die in the hospital to consider ways of promoting appropriate hospital transfer.

We are currently accepting applications on a rolling basis for Hartford/Jahnigen

Center of Excellence Assistant Professor and Fellowship Stipend awards. Because the Center of Excellence funding will be ending in December 2003, this is the final year for stipend awards. For further information, or to receive an application, please contact Danielle Holthaus at 303-315-1023.

Dr. Cari Levy has
received a Hartford/Jahnigen
Center of Excellence
Fellowship Stipend.

Two new fellows, Kristina Stefka, MD, and Susan Bray-Hall, MD, joined the geriatric medicine fellowship program in July 2002.

Dr. Stefka graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School, and went on to complete her Internal Medicine residency at Northwestern. Under the geriatric medicine fellowship program, she will investigate whether nursing home care differs for residents who do and do not have advanced care directives.

Dr. Bray-Hall received her medical degree and completed her Internal Medicine residency at the University of Colorado. Her primary research interest relates to hospice care, and she plans to investigate the methods by which physicians decide which medications are most beneficial for patients in hospice.

Donna Regenstreif, PhD, Senior Program Officer at the John A. Hartford Foundation, will visit UCD to conduct the annual site visit evaluation of the Hartford/Jahnigen Center of Excellence program on January 8, 2003. Current Hartford/Jahnigen COE Assistant Professor and Fellowship Stipend award recipients will attend the visit to present and discuss their work under the COE program.
