The mission of BIDMC is to provide the most up-to-date, evidence-based food, nutrition and health information and training to allied health professionals and to the public. The center benefits from the guidance of George L. Blackburn, M.D., Ph.D., and has the following responsibilities:
By extracting the most relevant, factual and updated information from research literature, BIDMC is able to develop tools and materials that are practical, useful and effective. Dr. Blackburn is Associate Professor of Surgery & Nutrition, Associate Director of the Division of Nutrition and the first incumbent S. Daniel Abraham Chair on Nutrition Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He is also Director of Nutrition Support, Chief of the Nutritional/Metabolism Laboratory and Director for the Study of Nutrition Medicine and its program to treat severe obesity, all of which are affiliated with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. In addition, Dr. Blackburn is immediate past president of the North American Association for the Study of Obesity; past president of the American Society of Clinical Nutrition, American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, and the American Board of Nutrition; and is a contributing member of many societies and organizations dedicated to the fields of food, nutrition and health. Over his long and productive career, Dr. Blackburn has trained over 100 fellows in applied and clinical nutrition, and has published widely on various aspects of nutrition, medicine and metabolism, with over 350 publications to date. He is on the editorial board of, and reviewer for, several journals including the Journal of American Medical Association and New England Journal of Medicine. He has been the recipient of numerous awards recognizing his valuable contributions to the field of nutrition, including the Joseph Goldberger Award in Clinical Nutrition from the American Medical Association in 1998. Dr. Blackburn is, and has been, a Principal and Co-principal Investigator of many NIH-funded grants over the last 25 years. Given his experience, dedication, vision and leadership, Dr. Blackburn contributes to many of the goals of the Centers for Obesity Research and Education. |
