Leslie
Leinwand, Ph.D
Dr. Leinwand is Chair of Molecular Cellular and Developmental Biology at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Her work as a cardiac biologist is of importance to basic scientists and clinicians. Trained as a molecular geneticist, Dr. Leinwand works on fundamental processes such as gene mapping, gene organization and promoter function, and RNA transcription. In the 1980’s her interest turned to cardiac and skeletal muscle biology, and she made important observations on the organization of the myosin gene family. In the 1990’s Dr. Leinwand turned her efforts toward the genetics and molecular physiology of cardiomyopathies. The study of cardiomyopathies has required a multidisciplinary approach, involving molecular biology, mouse genetics, mouse cardiac physiology, and the analysis of human tissues. To accomplish her research goals, Dr. Leinwand has developed a highly collaborative group in Boulder. She has brought together specialized basic scientists and clinical cardiologists who contribute greatly to the CU-CVI expertise and knowledge base.
