Michael Bristow, MD, PhD, Professor of
Medicine
Co-Director
of the Cardiovascular Institute
Dr. Bristow is the Head of the Division of Cardiology at the University of Colorado Denver in Denver, and the Co-Director of
University of Colorado Cardiovascular Institute. His research has
produced major breakthroughs in the three key interactive areas of heart
disease and heart failure research: 1) adrenergic mechanisms and their
disregulation in heart failure, 2) regulation of the fetal gene program
in the failing human heart, and 3) the development of new treatments and treatment strategies for
heart failure. His contributions in the discovery of altered adrenergic
mechanisms in the failing human heart have virtually changed the way
that researchers and physicians around the world are approaching heart
disease and heart failure today. His research finding, that adrenergic
signaling is elevated to a harmful degree in the failing human heart,
provided major impetus for the development of b-adrenergic
blocking agents as a very effective treatment of chronic heart failure.
His laboratory continues to refine this treatment approach, most recently
by developing pharmacogenetic targeting to improve efficiency and safety
of the b-blocking agent bucindolol. Moreover, Bristow and Leinwand’s recent discovery, that the fetal gene
program is activated in the failing human heart, has provided a new
conceptual framework for the development of the next generation of
successful therapies for heart failure. Dr. Bristow is a highly
recognized expert in his field, with hundreds of published papers,
abstracts and textbook chapters on heart failure research.
