Our continuing mission is to discover both the genes and molecular mechanisms responsible for heart disease and heart failure, thereby eliminating disability and death due to this condition. By bringing together physicians, basic molecular biologists and geneticists we utilize modern molecular biology, pharmacology, and physiology to examine alternation in gene expression, structural alterations (mutations and polymorphisms), and function in human heart tissues. Our vision is to become a leading world institution for discoveries of the causes of heart failure, mechanisms, therapies for heart muscle disease and heart failure through our unique human heart tissue bank, innovative techniques, and world-wide collaborations. We also train and educate future scientists, and serve as a unique resource for patients. Our core values guide day-to-day operations and influence interactions between the community and business structures both within and outside of the Institute. 1.
Contribution to Society – We are dedicated to the
ultimate goal of eliminating heart muscle disease and heart failure as
major health problems. We
are committed to increasing the flow of research findings and their
clinical applications to the medical profession and the public. 2.
Leadership and People – Our team members work together
with a shared vision of the greater good. We assemble a talented and
diverse community of leaders, and we value their contributions. Our
energizing leadership supports a constant sense of achievement at all
levels of the Institute.
3.
Innovation and Research – We seek and encourage
innovative solutions, in order to make progress above and beyond the
norm. 4.
A Sense of Urgency – We must move quickly to save lives
and stay at the head of our field. As leaders, we challenge ourselves
daily to improve all processes, in order to achieve our goals beyond
expectations. 5.
Collaboration – By collaborating with other institutions
with similar or complementary goals, we increase the effectiveness of
our efforts. 6.
The Education of Scientists and Physicians – We
acknowledge our responsibility for the education and training of the
best scientists, physicians, and physician educators dedicated to
solving the heart failure problem. 7.
Ethics and Moral Behavior – We undertake all endeavors
in the most ethical manner possible. Our
constituents are assured that we make all decisions with vigilant
reference to ethical and moral standards. The
Core Values were adopted at the meeting of the External Advisory Board
on April 16, 2001
