Oyate
The purpose of Oyate is to:
To develop a unified voice so as to have input into decisions
affecting
student interests in diversity matters on the UCHSC campus.
To create an environment that promotes unity
and open lines of
communication among minority and disadvantaged students
between all
branches of UCHSC.
To actively mentor college and
high school students who are interested in
health professions.
Oyate members
are students from the University of Colorado Health Sciences
Center and represent the School of Medicine, School of
Nursing, School of Dentistry, School of Pharmacy, Graduate
School, Physician’s Assistant Program and Physical Therapy
Program. Our students are primarily students of color or
disadvantaged status and we have a strong desire to see more
underrepresented minorities in health science careers. In
order to promote diversity at the CU Health Sciences Center we
realize that high school and undergraduate students need to be
exposed to career opportunities available in science.
Oyate is pleased to announce the formation of the HOMES
program. The HOMES program will give DPS high school students
the opportunity to find out about career opportunities through
interaction with Oyate students from the CU health science
center and career mentoring. We will also provide hands on
science activities that will highlight different career
options and all supplies will be provided. Through these
activities and interactions we aim to give students a better
idea of future career options.

SNMA
The Student National Medical
Association (SNMA) is the nation's oldest and largest
organization focused on the needs and concerns of medical
students of color. Membership includes nearly 5,000 medical
students, pre-medical students, residents, and licensed
physicians.
Established in 1964 by
Howard University College of Medicine students and Meharry
Medical College students, the SNMA claims over 30 years of
service to under-served communities.
SNMA programs and activities
are implemented by local chapters based at allopathic and
osteopathic medical schools throughout the nation.
These
programs are designed to (1) serve the health needs of
under-represented communities, educating people about
important health matters; and (2) assure that medical services
are sensitive to the needs of culturally diverse populations.
The SNMA is also committed
to assuring that students of color are encouraged to consider
and prepare for medical and scientific careers. Specific
guidance, education, and assistance is provided directly to
elementary, high school, and college students.
Nationally, the SNMA is
managed by a Board of Directors comprised of medical students
who serve as executive officers, regional directors, or
chairpersons of national committees.
This Board of Directors
makes the financial, legal, and programmatic decisions which
affect the organization. Located in Washington, D.C., the
SNMA's
National Headquarters serves as the organization's
administrative center. Managed by the executive director the
National Headquarters is the contact point for individuals and
companies interested in the SNMA and its programs.
SNMA Mission Statement
To create an atmosphere
wherein professional excellence and moral principals can find
the fullest expression.
To promote the
dissemination of information relative to minority issues in
the field of medical education
To take the necessary and
proper steps to eradicate practices in the field of health
profession education that compromises the goal of providing
quality education to minorities and women.
To promote the development
of workable programs of legislative policies for the provision
of enhanced access to better health care

SNPhA
The Student
National Pharmaceutical Association chapter at UCDHSC was
created in 2003 to “accept the challenge of serving the
underserved communities”. The overarching purpose of SNPhA is
to plan, organize, coordinate and execute programs geared
toward the improvement of the health, educational and social
environment of underserved communities. A primary objective of
the UCDHSC local SNPhA chapter is to educate these communities
on better health practices and to increase their awareness and
understanding of diseases.
SNPhA Mission Statement
SNPhA is an
educational service association of pharmacy students who are
concerned about the profession of pharmacy, healthcare issues,
and poor minority representation in these areas. The purpose
of SNPhA is to plan, organize, coordinate and execute programs
geared toward the improvement of the health, educational, and
social environment of minority communities.
