Visiting Students for Academic Year 2008 - 2009

Thank you for your interest in the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine's visiting student program. The School of Medicine offers students from LCME accredited medical schools in the U.S. and Canada a number of electives to which they can apply. Students must be in good academic standing and in their final year of study. Students will be considered for one four-week rotation.

Dates for visiting student electives must be according to our course section dates, there will be no exceptions.

Requirements

A completed application must be on file no less than six weeks prior to the course's beginning date. A nonrefundable application fee of $150 must be received with the aplication. Initial applications will be processed when received, however, actual course assignments will not be made until all required documents are complete and have been received by the visiting student coordinator. Students will be notified of acceptance no earlier than eight weeks, but no less than five weeks prior to the first day of the elective. Students will be notified of acceptance via e-mail only.

The University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine, requires a minimum of $1,000,000 per occurrence and $3,000,000 in aggregate medical malpractice coverage. There will be no exceptions to the amount and coverage is not available through the University of Colorado Denver. Please note that we do not participate in malpractice short-term affiliation agreements.

Students applying for a visiting student elective are required to pass a background check which includes criteria set by the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine. The background check must be done by the home school or by the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine. If the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine does the background check, the student must complete a consent and release form and pay a one-time non-refundable fee.

Students must be certified in BLS (Basic Life Support) or ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support).

H.I.P.A.A. training - students are required to complete the Veterans' Health Affairs (VHA) Privacy Policy training. When you have completed the training, print out a copy of the completion certificate and submit a copy with your application. The national link is https://www.vcampus.com/valo. You should self enroll and then select the Mandatory Course section which will link you to the Privacy Policy training page. No other H.I.P.A.A. training is accepted.

An official transcript or written verification from your school official stating the final grade received in the third-year core courses must accompany your application.

The University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine immunization form must be completed, signed by your school and returned with your application. Individual health records will not be accepted.

Other Key Information

Students are required to submit a current photograph which will be used for identification purposes only. This can be a small photo attached to your application or a digital photo emailed to the Visiting Student Coordinator at becky.gossert@uchsc.edu.

Personal health insurance coverage is required. The University of Colorado Denver is not liable for personal health issues.

Upon completion of the course, student evaluations will be sent by the department course coordinator for the elective. If your school requires their evaluation form be used please include the form with your application material.

On campus housing is not available. Information on other housing will be emailed to you once you have been scheduled for an elective.

We do not provide pagers or parking permits to visiting students.

We ask that you bring your home school student ID with you. A temporary student ID will be issued, which along with your home school ID will be used for identification on clinical services.
