Denver Health Medical Center is the public hospital for the City and County of Denver and with its network of primary care clinic sites, serves over 160,000 patients per year or approximately 25% of the population of Denver. The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Denver Health has 5 physician FTEs and provides a full range of services including standard endoscopies, liver biopsies, ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound, and is in the process of adding motility and capsule endoscopy capabilities. The endoscopy laboratory consists of 4 rooms for standard endoscopy and one special procedures room (ERCP and EUS) with its own dedicated fluoroscopic C-arm. The laboratory currently performs approximately 3000 procedures per year. The Division Chief is Neil W. Toribara, MD, PhD. William Brown, MD and Krishnavel Chathadi, MD are the other current full time faculty members with Thomas McGonagle, MD and John Singleton, MD working part time. The academic interests of the Division include disparities in health care delivery, identifying and remedying barriers to care specific to the patient population served by Denver Health, identification and characterization of patient populations at increased risk for developing adenomatous polyps, NASH (non alcoholic steatohepatitis), and treatment of hepatitis C. Basic science interests include the molecular and functional characterization of gastrointestinal mucins and development of techniques for generating siRNA libraries for in vitro targeted inhibition of gene expression.
