Program Description
This is a one-year clinical fellowship for training in hepatology and liver transplantation. It is designed for recent gastroenterology fellow graduates who wish to become proficient in management of general hepatology patients as well as management of liver transplant candidates and recipients. Training over 12 months will include at least 4 months on the clinical inpatient hepatology service, two or more weekly continuity clinics (hepatology and transplant hepatology), on-going participation in clinical research, participation in the Liver Transplant Selection Committee and liver histopathology conference, and bimonthly participation in hepatobiliary multidisciplinary conference.
Facilities and Resources
Fellows in this program will see patients at the University of Colorado Denver. Office space and computer access will be provided. Library facilities are available at UCD and are complimented by multiple Divisional and Sectional subscriptions to professional journals. Interaction and collaboration with the multiple disciplines involved in the care of hepatology patients will be encouraged. (Surgery, Oncology, Radiology, Pathology, Immunology, Nephrology).
General Goals and Objectives
The purpose of this program is to train an accomplished Hepatologist to provide superior care to patients with diseases of the liver. To this end, the major goals are, a) to develop a detailed knowledge of the work-up, diagnosis, and management of patients with acute and chronic liver conditions, b) to become proficient in the indications, technique, and interpretation of liver biopsy, c) to be knowledgeable on the indications, contraindications, and potential complications of procedures commonly ordered for patients with liver disease (radiology, TIPS, liver transplantation), d) to fulfill the guidelines for training in transplant hepatology as described the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.
