Admissions for the Human Medical Genetics Program at UCDHSC
Admission Philosophy
Students are selected on the basis of past academic performance,
previous laboratory research experience, and, where possible, individual
interviews. We select students who show high intellectual achievement,
creativity, independence, and strong motivation to become successful scientists.
Our Program recognizes that students who are attracted to a career in
genetics can have highly varied backgrounds.
Admission Course Requirements
Although there are no formal undergraduate course requirements,
students with a solid undergraduate foundation in mathematics and biological
and chemical sciences have performed best in the Program. It is suggested
that applicants have completed courses in biology, chemistry (general
and organic), physics, genetics, calculus, and statistics before entering
the Program. You may review the Ph.D. Training Program
in HUMAN MEDICAL GENETICS by going to the
HMGP Handbook
page.
Admission Examination Requirements
Applicants should have a combined Graduate Record Exam (GRE)
score of 1205 or higher. A GRE subject test is recommended but not required.
Official examination scores must be reported directly to the HSC Graduate
School by the Educational Testing Service. UCHSC GRE school code number
is R4877; Department code is Genetics 0210.
International applicants must provide GRE and TOEFL (Test of English
as a Foreign Language) scores.
TOEFL has now instituted internet based testing with three possibilities
for TOEFL scores: paper, computer, and internet. All three delivery methods
have different scoring scales. Although there are minimal scores of 550,
230, and 80 respectively, the recommended acceptable scores for each delivery
method are:
Paper – 570
Computer – 230
Internet – 89
