The Given Institute
Promoting a healthy future, in our community and beyond

Giving Back Through Leadership

Bruce Paton, M.D. has had a distinguished surgical and teaching career at the University of Colorado’s School of Medicine, and in retirement has wanted to give back to the medical community. While he has made many gifts in support of University of Colorado programs, his contribution to the Given Institute has stood out—in addition to cash support, Dr. Paton has served as the Institute’s unpaid director for ten years. Dr. Paton is excited to be at the forefront of the Given’s growth and renewed focus, and the Institute is fortunate to have his steady hand at the helm. “I have given to the Given Institute because of its great future as a center of learning in the Roaring Fork Valley, and its potential to disperse cutting edge medical knowledge to the community,” Paton says.

At the Given Institute, we see the future…

  • More doctors and scientists converge upon Aspen—forging key bonds with their peers, gaining inspiration, and generating new ideas to help us live longer, healthier lives
  • More public programs, talks, health fairs, and other wellness activities, assisting andmotivating Roaring Fork Valley residents to better understand their biosystems
  • Stronger links with University of Colorado Denver health experts and Anschutz Medical Campus resources
  • Year-round events abound due to an upgraded facility, exploiting our verdant, two-acre grounds and spectacular vistas
  • The Given Institute, UCD School of Medicine, and the Anschutz Medical Center become globally renowned destinations for those attacking today’s medical problems, and anticipating the health care needs of tomorrow

With your help, our vision for the future will be that much closer!

Everyone who shares our pursuit of better health—in our community, and around the world—has a stake in a renewed Given Institute Your support of our fundraising campaign will help us fulfill our vast potential.

Increased donor support will enable us to take the next, vital step in the Given Institute’s evolution. We’re focusing our energy on achieving these four goals:

  • Expand and improve our building and grounds ($10 million): By bettering our facilities, we can better serve our visitors by elevating our functionality and technology; enhancing our atmosphere; and increasing capacity to broaden our conference capabilities.

  • Launch visiting professorships: This will establish the Given Institute as a regular destination for top-notch health care providers, who will educate and support the Western Slope health community with programming on trends in select medical specialties.

  • Establish an endowment ($10 million): This will greatly enhance the Given’s operations and public outreach, and enable the institute to be financially self-sustaining.

  • Grow the Public Lecture Series endowment ($1 million): This will allow the Given to increase the number of free public health education programs for the local community and cover a wide array of topics.

A bigger venue, bolstered expertise, and broader community engagement will all converge to build a better Given Institute for the 21st century.
