General Requirements

The Graduate School is committed in philosophy and practice to promoting diversity among students, faculty, and staff. Applications from students representing a variety of backgrounds and experiences are encouraged.

Successful applicants reflect personal and academic backgrounds acceptable to the University. The University reserves the right to deny admission to applicants whose credentials indicate an inability to assume those obligations of performance and behavior deemed essential by the University as reflected in its honor code and lawful processes and functions as an educational institution.

Admission to the Graduate School is not admission to candidacy for an advanced degree. A student who wishes to become a candidate for a degree must make special application at the time and in the manner prescribed by the requirements for the degree sought. Students may be admitted to the Graduate School in either of the two categories described below.

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE), or its equivalent, is required for all applicants. The University of Colorado Denver-HSC Campus code is 4877.  Applicants should check with individual programs regarding the GRE and any recommended subject tests. Computer-based testing is offered year-round in many locations. GRE booklets (including application materials) are available at the Graduate School office, or by contacting the ETS/GRE program directly at (609) 771-7670. You can e-mail ETS staff at gre-info@ets.org or click here to visit the ETS Website.

Provisional Student Status

An applicant not meeting the specified criteria for admission as a regular student may be recommended by the program for admission as a provisional student. Provisional acceptance includes a statement of conditions which the student must meet in order to become a regular degree student.

Admission of the applicant as a provisional student requires the approval of the Assistant Dean of the Graduate School. Provisional students are subject to the same standards of performance required of regular degree students and must maintain a 3.00 grade point average or higher, according to the terms of their provisional admission. This GPA must be maintained each term on all work taken.

International Credentials and/or Students

International students or domestic students with credentials from institutions outside the United States are required to have those credentials evaluated by a professional evaluation service.  Three are recommended in the information below.  Additionally, international students are encouraged to apply six months to a year before the start of proposed graduate studies at the UCD to allow sufficient time for admission and visa authorization. Only those students who have completed a bachelor's degree or equivalent at a university in their own country or a bachelor's or master's degree in the United States are considered for admission.  Official copies of all transcripts in English and in the original language are required.  An outside professional evaluation of all higher education credentials is required prior to admission.  This evaluation must include an analysis of courses, grades, and grade point average, and U.S. degree equivalency.  Evaluations will be accepted from any reputable professional company.  For additional information, consult the "Information for Prospective Graduate Students from Other Countries" brochure.  International students should also consult the International Student and Scholars Services office and specific academic program websites for any additional information or requirements.

English Proficiency Testing

Students whose native language is not English or who have not completed a bachelor's degree or higher at an institution where the country's native language and the language of instruction is English must demonstrate language proficiency by submitting scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).  The University of Colorado Denver-HSC Campus code is 4877.  The minimum TOEFL score required for admission to a graduate program at UCD is 550 (paper test) / 213 (computer test) / 80 (internet test).  A score of 570 (paper) / 230 (computer) / 89 (internet) or higher is preferred.

Students who have a score below 550 / 213 / 80 are encouraged to apply to the University of Colorado's Intensive English Program (IEP) in Denver. IEP offers six levels of academic language instruction plus TOEFL preparation classes, as well as a University of Colorado I-20 for the F-1 student visa. The IEP I-20 would be transferable to the Health Sciences Center when the student attains a TOEFL score of at least 550 / 213 / 80 and is accepted into a UCD program.
