Long-Term Care and Rehabilitation Policy Program

Under the direction of Andrew M. Kramer, MD, the Long-term Care and Rehabilitation Policy Program within the Division of Health Care Policy and Research examines quality and outcomes of care for older persons in long-term care and post-acute care settings. Research conducted within this program has focused on nursing home quality of care; rehabilitation after acute episodes for hip fracture, stroke, or medical surgical problems; the long-term care survey process and state survey agency performance; payment systems for skilled nursing care; and electronic health information in post-acute and long-term care.

Current and recent projects conducted within the Long-term Care and Rehabilitation Policy Program include:

Nursing Home Quality of Care: Includes projects examining a wide range of nursing home quality-related issues, such as quality measurement, nursing home staffing, urinary catheter use in nursing homes, nursing home physicians’ care patterns, and the effects of do-not-resuscitate orders on the care of nursing home residents.

Rehabilitation Following Acute Care Episodes: Includes projects that examine outcomes for older persons receiving post-hospital care for stroke in a variety of settings, including skilled nursing facilities, rehabilitation hospitals, and home health.
