Dr. Sauaia is an Associate Professor of Medicine, Preventive Medicine and Surgery at the University of Colorado. She completed the MD degree in 1986 in Brazil and her PhD in Epidemiology at the University of Colorado. She has over 14 years experience in health services/health outcomes research. Dr. Sauaia was the Principal investigator of the federally funded Tepeyac Project, a community-participatory, church-based approach that has decreased cancer-screening disparities among Colorado Latinos. This six-year long statewide project has granted Dr. Sauaia national recognition as an expert in the health disparities arena. In addition, Dr. Sauaia was appointed to direct, implement and evaluate the cultural competence and diversity curriculum of the University of Colorado School of Medicine, which will be fully integrated into the four-years of the medical school program. As a Latina immigrant herself, bicultural and multilingual, Dr. Sauaia brings her own personal history to the table. She has gained the trust of the local Latino community based on a history of respect and candidness. At the same time, she has built a reputation as an evidence-based scientist with a solid publication and grant record. She considers herself a privileged woman who has a genuine passion for her work only surpassed by her love for her husband Gordon and their daughter Isabella.
