Urinary Catheter Use in Elderly Hip Fracture Patients Discharged to SNF

Funded by: Hartford/Jahnigen Center of Excellence Fellow Development Stipend
Project Period: 4/03 - 6/04

We have chosen to study urinary catheter rates at admission to skilled nursing facility (SNF) in the elderly hip fracture population with the overriding goal of using data from SNF admissions to evaluate quality of care in hospitals. This project has three specific aims: 1) to determine patient characteristics associated with indwelling catheter use on admission to or in skilled nursing facility in patients hospitalized with hip fracture; 2) to explore characteristics of hospitals with different patterns of urinary catheter use in post-hip fracture patients after adjusting for patient characteristics; and 3) to compare outcomes for patients having indwelling catheters with similar but uncatheterized patients. We will link administrative data from hospital and SNF admissions to follow patients' entire episodes of care.
