The pharmacy was established in 1995 to provide lowest cost factor to patients, support for clinical services and patient programs. The pharmacy and clinical staff, totaling over 250 years of combined experience in the treatment of hemophilia, consists of hematologists, pediatricians, researchers, nurses, nurse practitioners, social worker, physical therapist, genetic counselors, pharmacists, administrative staff and affiliates in infectious diseases, dentistry, genetics and orthopedics. The clinical services are provided by the Hemophilia & Thrombosis Center at the University of Colorado Denver clinical staff and the pharmacy services are provided by the pharmacy staff. - Comprehensive home factor distribution services (factor, supplies, ancillary items); home nursing services arranged when medically necessary
- Matching of assays to doses to minimize cost and maximize treatment plans
- Coordination of factor needs, treatment plan and education of staff for patients admitted to other institutions; serves as local source of emergency factor needs for regional hospitals
- Re-investment of all modest profit back into Hemophilia Center to self-sustain the direct patient services and programs
- Provision of factor for uninsured patients during short term lapses in insurance as resources are available
- Patient Assistance Program -- for factor assistance, the Center accesses all manufacturer, local, state or national programs, and provides factor for uninsured patients during short term lapses in insurance as resources are available. In addition, as a non-profit Treatment Center, the UCDHTC receives restricted contributions and donations from various donors. The Center administers funds through Patient Assistance policies approved by the University of Colorado Denver for other medical needs related to the treatment of hemophilia. The Patient Assistance Program is available to all patients of the Center, regardless of choice of pharmacy provider.
- Nursing services -- the Center provides walk-in, open-access, clinic-based nursing services to all patients and families for bleeding diagnosis, ongoing hemophilia and thrombophilia education and evaluation, factor infusions and home therapy education. When medically necessary, home nursing services are arranged to augment the treatment plan.
- Emergency Delivery-- All products, with multiple assay ranges, are stocked locally and are routinely delivered by either local couriers or overnight delivery services. During extreme emergencies, alternative methods such as counter-to-counter air cargo, bus lines, or emergency police transportation are utilized. The University of Colorado Denver status provides the HTC Pharmacy with high priority emergency services status during times of natural or other disasters.
- Product recall procedures: Lot numbers dispensed to each patient are tracked electronically. The Center participates in the Product Notification System and notifies all patients when a product that they received has been affected by a recall.
