Women With Bleeding Disorders
We are developing activities and groups for women who are carriers of a hemophilia gene, who have von Willebrand disease or other clotting deficiencies, or who are mothers of daughters with clotting deficiencies are active in this group. Educational programs are held twice a year and volunteers from this group represent women with bleeding disorders at nurse conferences, the Girl Scouts, church groups, health fairs and activities where women gather, providing education and awareness about the diagnosis of bleeding disorders. Support for this group is through the National Hemophilia Foundation’s Project Red Flag, and educational grants from ZLB Behring.
Over the past year, several activities have been provided. In November 2005, a Women’s Retreat was held at the JW Marriott in Cherry Creek. Educational programs and opportunities to connect on a personal level to other women with bleeding disorders, along with spa services and wonderful meals, gave the women involved a new understanding of their own and other’s bleeding disorders. This program was sponsored by ZLB Behring. An annual follow up meeting was held in April 2006 to include all participants that attended the earlier program.
Future meetings are being planned, the first in November 2006, that will be a day for women affected by bleeding disorders. Another meeting will be held at the Education Weekend for families on April 21 & 22, 2007.
PEP – Parents Empowering Parents
A peer-to-peer skills program that introduces parents to the tools they need to better handle the realities of raising a child with a bleeding disorder. This weekend program is available to all parents who have a child, aged 18 and younger, with a bleeding disorder. The program is sponsored by Bayer and is facilitated by Erin Stang and trained parents from the hemophilia community. To date, 42 parents from Colorado, Montana, Wyoming and Nebraska have participated. A PEP weekend is scheduled for October 27 – 29, 2006 in Denver. Please contact Erin Stang if you are interested in participating at 303-724-1328.
Parent Support Group
This is a monthly meeting for parents who have a child with a bleeding disorder. The support group provides a time for parents to share feelings, provide and receive support, problem solve and share coping strategies. Childcare is provided. Please call Erin Stang if you are interested in participating at 303-724-1328.
First Step
This is a collaborative program designed and funded by the National Hemophilia Foundation for new families that have a child with a bleeding disorder. The Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center at the University of Colorado Denver and the Hemophilia Society of Colorado (HCS) provide activities to help these new families learn more about their child’s diagnosis, interact with other families in similar situations, and receive advice from veteran parents in their local community. Sonji Wilkes coordinates the program from the HSC and Erin Stang coordinates the HTC efforts. Program topics include hemophilia 101, child safety, managing a trip to the emergency room, health insurance and talking to your child’s school about his/her bleeding disorder. There is an annual summer picnic and quarterly educational/social gatherings. First Step planning has been initiated in Montana. The next First Step program in Colorado is scheduled for November 4, 2006. Please contact Erin Stang at 303-724-1328 if you are interested in attending the meeting.
Summer Camp
Mile High Summer Camp (for children ages 7-13 with bleeding disorders and their siblings) is a week-long summer camp sponsored by the Hemophilia and Thrombosis Center at the University of Colorado Denver where youth learn about bleeding disorders, develop skills and have fun. Camp for 2008 will be held July 27 – August 1. If you are interested in helping plan camp, please contact Erin Stang at 303-724-1328. Registration forms will be placed on the website in March 2008.
