The IMAGE Group is On-The-Move...

During the week of August 20th, 2007, the IMAGE group will be moving from the current Leetsdale location to a new home on the Anschutz Medical Campus (AMC). It is anticipated that our research activities will be suspended the entire week of August 20th and will begin in our new facility on Monday, August 27th.

Our new location will be on the third floor of the Leprino Office Building (LOB) which is located near the Anschutz Inpatient Pavilion. Parking for research participants will be located in a connected parking garage, east of the LOB. Exercise participants will enjoy several new amenities in our exercise facility including flat screen televisions, mountain views, better temperature regulation, and water fountains. We are also looking forward to being conveniently located on the same floor as many of our other resources such as the clinical research center, lab, and kitchen.

Thanks to all of you who participate in our research studies and we hope to see you at the new facility!

The Leprino Office Building (LOB), circled in the map above, is located on the southeast side of East 17th Place and Racine Street. For more information about the AMC, including maps of the campus, visit: www.uchsc.edu/anschutzmedicalcampus

The MOXI Study:

Myogenic(muscle) and Osteogenic(bone)
Responses to Exercise and Ibuprofen

The IMAGE group’s newest study, MOXI, will examine how the use of ibuprofen in older women and men affects muscle and bone health. Weight-bearing physical activity is widely recommended for older adults to counteract age-related loss of muscle and bone. However, previous research in animals has suggested that use of ibuprofen before or during exercise reduces some of the beneficial effects on muscle and bone. The MOXI study will determine whether this occurs in older women and men.

The MOXI study involves participation in a supervised exercise program. The exercise program will include weight lifting and weight-bearing exercises such as walking/jogging on a treadmill 4 days a week for 9 months in the IMAGE Exercise Research Lab. Individual instruction will be provided. On each exercise day participants will take one study pill 1.5 hours before exercise and 1 pill immediately after exercise. The pills will be either 400 mg of ibuprofen (usual dose) or placebo (no active drug). Participants will have an equal chance of being put in 1 of these drug groups:

Group AGroup BGroup C
Placebo before exercisePlacebo before exerciseIbubrofen before exercise
Placebo after exerciseIbubrofen after exercisePlacebo after exercise

The main inclusion criteria are:
  • Women and men, aged 60 to 75 years
  • Typical use of ibuprofen, acetaminophen, aspirin, or similar drugs less than 3 days per month
  • No history of peptic ulser or stomach bleeding

Wendy Kohrt, PhD, is the Principal Investigator of the MOXI study. For more information please contact Marsha Steirn at 303-372-2933 or Marsha.Steirn@uchsc.edu. This study is funded by the National Institute on Aging and has been approved by the Colorado Multiple Institutional Review Board (protocol # 06-0769).

DOES THE IMAGE GROUP HAVE A STUDY FOR YOU?

Studies for Women & Men:

  • The MOXI Study is examining how the use of ibuprofen in older, exercising women and men affects muscle and bone health. Eligible participants are 60-75 years of age who are not currently in a weight lifting program, have no history of peptic ulcers or stomach bleeding, and do not typically use acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or similar drugs more than 3 days per month. (COMIRB #06-0769)
  • The DRIFT study is comparing the effect of two different diet methods - a normal, low calorie diet or intermittent fasting (not eating or drinking anything with calories every other day) - on weight loss and other health measures. Eligible participants are women and men, 18-55 years, who are obese based on a body mass index (BMI) ≥30 (to determine your BMI go to www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi). (COMIRB # 06-0383)
  • The Metabolic Syndrome and Cognition (MS-Cog) study is investigating how a drug (Pioglitazone) used to treat diabetes will affect memory and thinking ability of people at risk for diabetes and cognitive impairments. Eligible participants are 55 years and older who have risk factors for heart disease and diabetes such as high body fat, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and high blood sugar. (COMIRB #06-0388)
  • The Lose-It Study will investigate the amount of exercise that health care providers should prescribe in order for patients to maintain weight loss. Eligible participants are healthy men and women between 18-45 years of age. Participants must be willing to engage in lifestyle changes including diet modifications and up to 100 minutes of daily physical activity. (COMIRB # 06-0369)
Studies for Women:

  • The SHAPE study is examining how short-term changes in estrogen affect cardiovascular health. Eligible participants are premenopausal women 21-35, perimenopausal women 40-55, and postmenopausal women 45-70 years, who are non-smokers, have normal blood pressure, and who are not taking birth control or hormone therapy. (COMIRB # 06-0537)

Studies for Men:
  • The TEAM study is examining the effects of testosterone supplementation and exercise in men who have low-normal testosterone levels. Eligible participants are men, 60 years and older, non-smokers, in good general health, and not currently doing high-intensity weight lifting exercise. (COMIRB # 02-1056)
  • The Mr. ACET study is examining how the use of acetaminophen and ibuprofen in older, exercising men, affects muscle and bone health. Eligible participants are men, 60 years and older, who are not currently in a weight lifting program, have no history of peptic ulcers or stomach bleeding, and do not typically use acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or similar drugs more than 3 days per month. (COMIRB # 06-0343)
  • The PROXI study is determining if weight lifting helps to prevent the loss of muscle and bone mass that occurs in men with prostate cancer on androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). Eligible participants are men, 45-85 years, with prostate cancer, who are taking ADT or plan to start ADT. (COMIRB #02-958)
  • The New-to-ADT study is examining changes in muscle that occur in men on androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). Eligible participants are men, 45-85 years who have prostate cancer that has not spread to other organs, who plan to begin ADT. (COMIRB #05-0196)
  • The Kinetics study is examining the ability of leg muscles to use oxygen during exercise in healthy men and men with peripheral arterial disease. Eligible participants are non-smoking men, 50-70 years of age. (COMIRB #05-0718)
