COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS:

·        Moderator, First UCD  Frontiers of Medical Science Program (Genetics), September 1988. Permanent moderator of these programs since then, including “Immunology” (1989), “Psychiatry” (1990), “21st Century Medicine” (1990), “Cancer” (1991), “Molecular Biology” (1991), “Neurobiology (1992), “Addiction” (1992), “Autoimmunity” (1993), “AIDS” (1994), “Emerging Infections” (1995), “Medical Ethics” (1996). These are single-evening, single-topic in depth symposia for the general public. In recent years Public Relations has lacked the budget to support this program.

·        Developer, Organizer, and Lecturer,  Mini Medical School for the general public, February 1990-. This program, the first Mini Med School, is now in its 18th session and has been attended by more than 14,000 people, reaching 1,700 people in 2008 alone (450 locally, 1250 by satellite in 15 sites around Colorado). It has been emulated at over 80 schools and hospitals around the world. Now in partnership with the Denver Museum of Nature & Science. http://www.uchsc.edu/minimed

·        Planning Committee, NIH/AAMC Symposium on Mini Medical Schools, November 2004 in conjunction with the AAMC’s annual meeting.

·        Organizer and lecturer, University of Colorado Mini College, Aspen, CO, Winter 1999; Vail, CO, Winter 2000; Grand Junction, CO, Winter 2001; San Diego, Spring 2001. This program is suspended because the CU system lacks the budget to support it.

·        Organizer, The Colorado Café Scientifique, Denver, 2003-. Based on the French Café Philosophique and following a British model, this group, the oldest in America,  meets once a month in a downtown pub for open moderated discussion of a current “hot topic” in science. Attendance has been over capacity (up to 200) each evening. Topics have included Immunization; The Origin of the Universe; Obesity: and Health Care Controversies. We have helped Cafés get started in Boulder, Colorado Springs, Frisco and Fort Collins, as well as in several other cities in the US and Canada. See: http://CafeSciColorado.org

·        Co-Organizer with Helen Macfarlane of the University of Colorado Art in Science | Science in Art exhibition and competition. The show, of works by scientists that can be considered art, and by artists that illustrate science, has travelled around Colorado in 2007-8, and will go to New York in 2009. An online version is available at http://ArtSci.uchsc.edu

·        Planning: Mini Med School for Colorado High School Students. This would be available on a streaming server so that individual classes could arrange their best times. Many CU medical students have already volunteered to be a part of this state-wide outreach program, and funding is being sought.

·        Planning: Immunology Course for Medical Students and Residents in Developing Countries. Working with medical schools in Rwanda and Uganda to produce an electronically-delivered course in human immunology for countries in which this basic science expertise is minimal. It will cover the key issues in basic human immunology and relate them to the medical problems seen in developing countries. The platforms chosen will be appropriate to the locally available technology.
