The research interests of the Henson lab involve exploring the immunological consequences of the removal of dying (particularly apoptotic cells) as they pertains to many biological processes including inflammation, lung disease and autoimmunity. My specific project focuses on the effects of defective clearance of apoptotic cells by macrophages in the NOD mouse model of autoimmune diabetes and how this potential source of self antigen might be shuttled towards processing and presentation by dendritic cells, leading to activation of self reactive T cells and disease.
