The UCD Immunology students are focused on research, gifted with intellectual curiosity and highly motivated. Pippa Marrack likes to say that the graduate students here have “true grit” meaning we face every challenge head on and accomplish our goals. That being said, we also make balancing our lives with many fun activities a high priority.
To augment our formal training of classes and laboratory work, we take part in student organized data and journal clubs. These venues provide an inviting atmosphere where we present and discuss new findings in both our own and other cutting edge laboratories. Student research is presented during the seminar series entitled Research In Progress (RIP). These seminars elicit good discussion and feedback between students and everyone in attendance. World-renowned guest lecturers frequent our department to give seminars and meet with students to discuss current research.
As graduate students within the department of Immunology, we have strong ideas of how to make the graduate program a top rate-training program. For this reason we have created the Immunology Graduate Student Board (IGSB) that is entrusted with decision making that would benefit all immunology students.
Building and maintaining a positive and supportive community amidst graduate students is regarded as a major goal. This encourages not only a fun scientific environment but also fosters a free exchange of ideas, furthering everyone’s research and graduate training. The department retreat, student retreat, and regular happy hours and parties all serve the effort of maintaining this community.
