History of the Integrated
Department of Immunology

During the last 60 years scientists have learned a lot about how the immune system works and these discoveries have had a tremendous impact on our ability to understand, diagnose and treat diseases .  Some of the most important discoveries have been made here in Colorado, by members of the faculty of the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine and National Jewish Health.   The following is a brief description of  how some of these discoveries have affected our ability to treat diseases caused by the immune system.

Art in Science | Science in Art is a juried exhibition of images made by University of Colorado affiliated scientists and artists. Scientists were asked to submit images that they made as part of their everyday work. Artists whose images illustrate or offer insights into scientific principles were also asked to take part. The questions we were asking: How wide is the gulf between Science and Art? Can there be any communication across it?

To answer these questions you need data; hence our Call for Entries, which went out to the broad University of Colorado community, with its thousands of staff and faculty and tens of thousands of students. Of the hundreds of images submitted, 30 were selected by a jury to be printed in large format, framed, and hung in this traveling show, which opened January 2007 in Denver, and has since appeared all around Colorado, in Monterrey, Mexico, and in New York.

The exhibition will hang at National Jewish Health in 2 installments of 15 works; the first half until 23 November, and the second until 21 December. There are flyers with the captions, but the fun is to study the works first and try to decide what they depict!

These and an additional 36 equally provoking images may be studied online at http://ArtSci.uchsc.edu

The show is curated by Helen Macfarlane, a medical illustrator, and J.J. Cohen, an immunologist, from the University of Colorado Denver’s School of Medicine.

The exhibit showcases the extraordinary talents and range of scientists and artists in Colorado, where 4 of the 20 highest concentrations of science and technology workers in the country are located (Fort Collins, Boulder, Denver, Colorado Springs). No state gets so much productivity from such a modest investment in higher education.
