The Cost of Living in Denver
Rent in Denver for anyone living alone can range from $450 - $700/month. There are a lot of rent ads out there that may give you the impression that places further away from campus (such as, Aurora) have better quality housing for the better price. This accounts, in part, for many of our incoming students ending up living further from the National Jewish campus during their first year. There are more affordable and pleasant neighborhoods near campus. You can talk to current students for their personal opinions of the housing in the closer-to-work areas, but here is some general information.
The area closest to National Jewish generally has ranch-style houses and some apartment complexes that charge pretty much average rent ($450-$600). Some of the deals that can be found here are in properties offering shared rents. Some property owners take advantage of the close proximity to both NJC and UCD campuses and allow their properties to be rented by a group of students. A lot of medical school interns or residents take up on these deals.
The Cherry Creek district is where all the rich folks live. However, you can find pretty cheap rents here when they’re available. They can range from $500-800/month. Rents from these areas tend not to be advertised online, rather just driving around the neighborhood or looking in the newspaper classifieds may be your best search options.
The City Park neighborhoods consist mainly of ranch-style houses and less apartment homes. They are generally a little more expensive than their south counterparts. However, the area is generally quiet and the proximity City Park is a plus.
Cheeseman Park and Capital Hill areas are more compact and consist of apartment complexes for the most part. The rents in these neighborhoods tend to range from $550-$700/month.
Downtown and Uptown areas are predictably expensive. They can range from $700-ridiculous/month.
Washington Park is a nice neighborhood south of Speer. They have a lot of small houses and apartment homes with average rent.
There are some neighborhoods that have had bad press. Some notables are E. Colfax on Colfax (East of Quebec), Glendale (South), 14th through 15th on Downing, and 13th & Pearl.
