The Department of Immunology offers a Doctor of Philosophy degree through the Graduate School of the University of Colorado . Graduate training leading to the Ph.D. degree includes 45 credit hours of formal course work, four (4) laboratory rotations, an oral comprehensive examination, 45 credit hours of dissertation research, and a final defense of the dissertation. Participation in seminars, journal and data clubs, and laboratory meetings are also an integral part of the program. The program of study is designed to provide the student with a comprehensive background and training in Immunology. Studies towards a Ph.D. degree are completed in 4 to 5 years, with the student joining a thesis laboratory after four rotations (1 year) in the program.

Admission is based on an evaluation by a departmental committee comprised of Department of Immunology faculty. Review begins as soon as an applicant's file is complete.  The Admissions Committee weighs many factors including the applicant's undergraduate scholastic record, prior performance in laboratory research, letters of recommendation, statement of purpose, and GRE scores.

Top candidates will be selected for a personal interview, which will occur on selected Fridays during January to March. Out of state applicants will need to arrive in Denver on Thursday evening before the interview and stay in Denver through Saturday night. The Department will pay travel and accomodation expenses. During the interview process, a number of faculty will discuss their current research. In addition, the applicant will outline their interests in Immunolgy. Applicants will also meet with a number of graduate students currently in the program.

Faculty evaluations of interviews, with input from graduate students, are used by the Admissions Committee to make final admission recommendations to the Graduate School.
