The University has strict guidelines for the disposal of all equipment. This is no different for computers and computer monitors. Please review the document below that was developed by the Space and Asset Management Office (SAM) at UCD. The Information Technology Services department is only responsible for the units that have been pre-approved for disposal by SAM and are delivered by Facilities Operations to the designated areas for proper handling.
SUBJECT: DISPOSAL OF COMPUTERS AND OTHER RELATED ITEMS
With computers undergoing upgrades or becoming obsolete much quicker than in previous years, the need to dispose of them in a rapid and authorized manner has become a pressing issue. There have been recent changes by the Colorado Department of Health and Environment pertaining to the disposal of computers, monitors, and other related items. In most cases, such items must now be managed as potentially hazardous waste (toxic lead) or properly recycled (cleanse copyrighted software & confidential records from hard drive). The Health and Safety Division together with the Space and Asset Management Office have developed a process to properly manage the recycling and disposal of computers and related items.
All computer items regardless of original cost or "value" must be listed on a Capital Equipment Disposal Request Form which may be found at the following website: http://administration.ucdenver.edu/admin/policies/fiscal/fp1-02e.doc. This document should be downloaded, filled-out completely including approval, and forwarded to the Space and Asset Management Office at Campus Box A005/129. Under normal circumstances, within one week after receipt of the completed request form, you will receive written instructions on contacting the appropriate Facilities Operations Office to arrange for pick-up. Please do not contact them for pick-up until you’ve received these instructions. This service is provided at no charge to UCD departments.
The process outlined above applies only to computer equipment owned by the UCD. Equipment belonging to University Colorado Hospital (UCH), University Physicians Incorporate (UPI), or other entities should be disposed of properly through their respective offices.
