Appropriate Use Policies (AUPs)
First of all, let's not rule out common sense - most abusive situations are
obvious. Ignorance of the rules is not an excuse. These links to policy
information are not necessarily complete.
The UCD ITS Department has several computer/network use policies:
UCD has administrative policies, some of which may
apply to computer use.
UC Boulder's ITS department offers
guidelines
that largely apply to UCD employees and students.
CU Systems has computer-related
policies that apply to all campuses:
The state and federal governments most likely have policies that apply to computer
use. For instance, the State of Colorado's Office of Innovation and Technology
has published
several papers regarding proper computer use, and of course HIPAA
is a big concern here.
The easiest ways to attract unwanted attention are to:
- send a message of a personal nature to campus-wide mailing lists (a.k.a. HSC-Announce)
- your opinion on a hot topic, or promotion of an outside company;
- use state resources - email, desktop, work time, web space - for anything but
university business;
- trigger an e-mail virus;
- compromise the security of the campus net;
- participate in an e-mail chain letter.
