TEDDY Laboratory Staff

 

Kathy Waugh

Kathy Waugh is the Laboratory Coordinator for both the TEDDY and DAISY studies. She was born and raised in Mokena, IL but now lives with her family in Parker. Kathy has worked in science for 18 years and now manages the laboratory personnel and makes sure the lab is running smoothly. She works with other TEDDY sites as part of the lab committee as well as the coordinator committee. When she's not at work Kathy enjoys running, biking, hiking, camping, and all Colorado outdoor activities. She shares a full house with her husband, two young boys, two dogs, and two cats.

Niki Viellenave

Niki Viellenave is a research assistant for the TEDDY and DAISY studies, working in the DAISY/TEDDY lab processing blood samples collected during subject clinic visits as well as cord blood collected from newborn hospital screening. She also perfoms some data entry and data editing tasks. Niki is from Evergreen, CO and received her Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from University of Northern Colorado. Niki's interests outside of TEDDY and DAISY include music, reading, hiking, biking and traveling.

Heather Nilson

Heather Nilson is a laboratory research assistant for DAISY and TEDDY processing blood samples and data entry. She’s from Denver and earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Colorado Denver. Heather’s hobbies are cooking, reading, shooting pool, hiking and dog training.

 

Megan Stern

Megan Stern works as a laboratory research assistant for the DAISY and TEDDY lab. She processes blood samples and does data entry. Originally from Arvada, CO Megan earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Colorado Denver. In late 2005 and early 2006 she did research in McMurdo, Antarctica for 4 months on a US research base. In her free time she enjoys hiking, inline hockey and plays both the guitar and flute.

Andrew Perlman

Andrew is a research assistant with the DAISY Study. Andrew’s main responsibilities are organizing and preparing samples for experimentation, but also helps out processing blood and entering data. Andrew is originally from Littleton, CO and earned his BSC in Biology from Trinity Western University in Langley, British Columbia. Andrew loves to fly fish, ski, hike, bike, camp and scuba dive. Andrew is currently seeking an MSPH degree from the University of Colorado.

Michael Tisdell

Michael Tisdell works in the lab for the TEDDY/DAISY studies. He graduated with a B.S. in Sports Medicine. Michael enjoys snow boarding, fitness/nutrition, and all things science.

Ruth Bedoy

Ruth Bedoy is a research assistant for the TEDDY and DAISY studies. She works in the TEDDY/DAISY lab and processes blood samples that come in during clinic visits. She also processes cord blood for TEDDY and does data entry. She graduated from University of Colorado Denver with a Bachelor of Science in Biology and a Psychology minor. She is from Lima, Peru. Since she just got married in May of 2007, she loves spending time with her husband and two new dogs, Jake and Gambit.

 

Courtney Butler

Courtney Butler is a research assistant for the DAISY/ TEDDY study and also does some lab work, processing blood samples collected during subject clinic visits. She has been working for the study since 2003. She was born in Austin, TX but has lived in Colorado for most of her life. Courtney attended Metro State College while working on her Bachelor of Science in Biology, and she is also a certified Medical Coding and Billing Specialist. Courtney and her husband have a two year old son and just recently welcomed another little boy in July. Together they enjoy hiking, walking, camping, and anything outdoors.

Sara Hatayama

Sara Staller Hatayama is a research assistant in the lab, processing blood for the TEDDY and DAISY studies. She grew up in Evergreen, CO, but left to get her Bachelors of Science in Biology with a Music minor from the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, WA. Sara and her husband then moved to Indonesia for two years before returning to Colorado. She's happy to be back in her home state, and loves to be outside training horses, hiking, and rock climbing.

 

Laurie Birks

Laurie Birks is a research assistant for the TEDDY and DAISY studies. She divides her time at work between the lab and the front desk. In the lab she processes samples collected during clinic visits. At the front desk she assists arriving subjects that participate in the BDC’s numerous studies. Laurie grew up in Pueblo West, Colorado and went on to attend the University of Colorado at Boulder where she earned a B.A. in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology and Spanish. She is a new member to the team having just joined in July 2008. She enjoys camping, skiing, movie watching, and traveling.
