hen the doors to the Barbara Davis Center for
Childhood Diabetes opened in 1980, Clinical Director Dr. H. Peter
Chase was already known in the medical community as not only a brilliant
physician but also an individual of rare compassion. Ask any parent
of a child treated at the Center and you will hear such accolades
as "dedicated, caring, knowledgeable."
Barbara Davis, founder of the Children's Diabetes Foundation said, "Dr. Chase is a brilliant physician and a great humanitarian.
He is the dearest friend that a child with diabetes can have. We
feel very fortunate and grateful for all his hard work. I don't
know where we'd be without him."
Recognized among the top 1% of physicians in America, Dr. Chase
has been a leader in the growth of the clinic. In 1975 he cared
for 40 children in the fledgling diabetes program. In 1980 the clinic
saw 450 children and by 1999 over 3,000 children and young adults
were under the Center's care.
While directing clinical programs at the BDC, Dr. Chase has also
served for well over two decades as physician and/or medical director
of the diabetes camp and medical coordinator of the BDC ski trips.
He was also instrumental in establishing and directing all five
of the Center's national post-graduate programs for health professionals.
Additionally, Dr. Chase somehow found time over the past 24 years
to author nine editions of the acclaimed educational book, Understanding
Insulin Dependent Diabetes, as well as over 150 research articles
and 41 books or book chapters in a 30-year period.
Please join with colleagues, friends and families who have had the
privilege of knowing and working with Dr. Chase by supporting the
H. Peter Chase Endowed Professorship named in his honor. Help us
build upon his remarkable accomplishments in meeting the needs of
children with diabetes.
An endowed professorship is a sum of money, usually in honor of
an individual of great distinction, set aside in the University
Trust of the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Our
goal is $5 million. The interest from funds raised will be used
to pay the Clinical Director salary, secretarial assistance and
research support for the person holding the professorship.
The creation of an endowed professorship in the name of Dr. Chase
will help the Center in countless ways. Its purpose would be to:
Provide funds to:
Perpetually attract an outstanding clinical director
Help care for every patient in need
Relieve the strain of meeting annual budgets
Facilitate the development of new clinics and programs
Assure continuation of:
An outstanding clinical research program of excellence
Health professional education programs on type 1 diabetes
Dr. Chase's educational book and educational programs
Children's ski program and other activities
The long term goals for the Barbara Davis Center go hand-in-hand
with the purpose of the Dr. Chase Endowed Professorship. The Center's
plan for building healthy kids, strong families and a strong diabetes
center are dependent upon:
Developing:
Specialized clinics such as foot care and diabetic neuropathy
Educational materials and programs
Assuring:
Continuity of care programs
Continued excellence of care and clinical research at the BDC
Adequate space to care for additional patients
A biennial program on type 1 diabetes for health care professionals
Support of the Children's Diabetes Foundation's ski trips and other
activities for patients
No gift is too small and every contribution will
help to continue his important work. Please contact either the Barbara
